MIKE PETTY
Learn how your students can easily create fun, non-digital games based on your language arts or social studies course content. I will share my “game design project packs” I created as templates in Google Apps. They combine reflection, higher-order thinking, 21st century skills and game design into an engaging activity your students will be excited to share. And it won’t cost you weeks of class time!

The Genius in Youth and Popular Texts
|
Room 128
|
ERIK SKOGSBERG - DAN WOLFORD
From Tweets to raps, Instagrams to Vines, lyrics to videogames, youth are powerful writers, problem-solvers, creators, and critics with the texts in their lives. However, it’s still too rare that these texts and connected literacies are welcome in classrooms. This workshop offers teachers an immersive experience with Genius, a powerful social annotation tool, which supports taking up these texts, literacies, and the issues of equity oftentimes wrapped up in their inclusion.

ARTHUR CHIARAVALLI
Is your feedback helping students or holding them back? Universal Design for Learning emphasizes the importance of "mastery-oriented" feedback that is "relevant, constructive, accessible, consequential, and timely" (National Center on Universal Design for Learning). This session examines some critical misunderstandings about feedback and offers some alternative perspectives and practices that will help you optimize this aspect of learning. Are you ready to learn some easy and practical tools that will allow you to provide high-quality, actionable feedback in less time?

ANGELA ELKORDY
You are curious -- what is “coding in the classroom? “computational thinking”? If you'd like to know more about these ideas, this session is for you. How can we foster computational thinking and coding skills in our young students, with or without technology supports? This session is an overview and introduction for educators who are interested in learning the “why” and “how” of the topic, particularly in under-resourced learning contexts with diverse learners.

Disruptive Learning through UDL and Design Thinking

BRYAN DEAN
As the role and landscape of education changes from bureaucratically driven pipelines to consumer driven platforms questions of equity and design begin to emerge. How do we ensure that education is truly designed for ALL learners? How do we intentional design learning trajectories that are responsive to end user needs? How do we bust the myth of average learners? How do we avoid designer bias in our designs? In this interactive session participants address these questions through Design Thinking protocols and UDL practices. The disruption of education isn't as daunting a task as we believe given this new framework. Are you ready to begin your journey?
